Management is the leading part of an organization. It’s all about direction and control of business units and activities. Management is everywhere, it can be a business, a non-profit organization, or government body. Management functions and activities are not limited to managers and supervisors. Every extension worker of the organization has some management and reporting functions which are considered as part of their job.
Management is the process of designing organizational goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively by working with and through other people. And the whole process includes strategic planning, setting; objectives, managing resources, extending the human and financial assets needed to acquire objectives and measuring results.
According to Harold Koontz, “Management is an art of getting things done through and with the people in formally organized groups. It is an art of creating an environment in which people can perform and individuals and can co-operate towards the attainment of group goals”.
Management has the following 4 features:
- It is a process or series of continuing and related activities.
- It focuses on reaching organizational goals.
- It helps to gain these goals by working with and through others.
- And efficiently using limited resources in the changing world.
As I said, Management is not only the manager’s responsibility. It’s everyone’s job! That’s why everyone needs to realize the meaning of management in order to know what management skills to develop. Management is like an investment: someone with money to invest and wanting the best return. In short word, it can be defined as achieving goals in a way that makes the best use of all resources.
