The root of United Airlines traces back to Varney Air Lines (VAL) which was founded in 1926 in Boise, Idaho by Walter Varney. Walter Varney also founded Continental Airlines in 1932 and its name was changed to Varney Speed Lines in 1934. On April 6, 1926, Walter Varney flew the first privately contracted airmail flight in the USA. In 1927, William Boeing founded Boeing Air Transport. It made a contract with the United States Post Office Department to operate airmail routes. In 1929, Boeing merged the company with Pratt & Whitney to form the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UTC). But, within 28 months UTC formed United Air Lines, Inc. as a holding company for its airline subsidiaries.

In 2006, there were some discussions about the merger of Continental Airlines and United Airlines, and that discussion again resumed on April 16, 2010. Finally, the board of directors of Continental and UAL Corporation agreed on May 2, 2010, to merge two companies and continue a combined operation after the approval of shareholders. On October 1, 2010, the UAL Corporation changed its name to United Continental Holdings, Inc. and the merged airline began operating under a single air operator’s certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration on November 30, 2011.
